If a sentence contains the verb ‘pedir’ (to ask), the verb relating to what someone is asked to do takes the subjunctive form.

Emotional impact of action

When the speaker or the subject of the main clause expresses their feelings about an action, the verb referring to that action is subjunctive. If a sentence begins ‘es malo’ (it is bad) or ‘es bueno’ (it is good) the verb that follows will always be in the subjunctive.

Conditional Events

An action that can only happen if certain conditions are met is described with a subjunctive verb. Conditional actions are introduced with phrases such as ‘a menos’ (unless) and ‘tan pronto como’ (as soon as).

The Spanish subjunctive indicates actions which are uncertain or subject to value judgements. If a sentence contains an expression that indicates it is not a simple statement of fact, it will also include a subjunctive verb.
